Stop the world, I want to get off
This is what many people are feeling right now. With job loss, depression, loneliness, etc. people at times feel overwhelmed. Jesus on the other hand said, “I came so that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” So where is the perceived disconnect from the promises of God and what many say they are feeling right now. Here in John 10, Jesus is talking about his sheep and how the devil and the world come to steal, slaughter and destroy people’s lives. Some of this is self made by our choices. Yet, God is inviting every human being to come to him to experience this life that is abundant. The dictionary defines abundant this way “to have plenty of”. Plenty of life and that only comes by surrendering to God through his Son Jesus. Jesus is the good shepherd who watches over his sheep making sure they are safe and protected in the things that are important coming and going as he leads them.
What satisfies humans is only the life that God can give. We go through life looking for temporary fulfillment in so many things that actually steal life from us. Have you ever wondered why, when someone helps another person, they feel good inside. Those things that are God’s way of life lead us closer to him and on this journey, we can come to know God personally. Each choice we make either leads us closer to God or away from him. We all look for temporary things to fill this void. Sex, over eating, partying, drugs, extreme danger, etc. that may bring a temporary satisfaction, but then we find that we need them over and over and they can become additions rooting deeply into our lives. It can become like a roller coaster with ups and downs that never stop. A friend once told me that even those who try to follow Christ, but don’t have a relationship with Christ, can feel like they are straddling a fence with one foot in the world trying to pull them back in and one foot trying to step into the kingdom toward freedom. None of this gives peace until they step over into the kingdom of God surrendering and allowing God to lead. God says that he offers us peace, joy and love. God offers a peace this world cannot give. God offers joy deep within. God offers us love through what he did and by experience through his Holy Spirit. These bring a fulfillment that the world cannot provide.
Instead of saying stop the world, I want to get off, say, “Jesus, come into my heart and set me free. Help me to know you, to follow you and walk with you today and everyday. Forgive my sins and give me your life abundant, your peace, joy and love to sustain me. I want to be yours forever. Give me strength in this life until you call me home.”
