  • How Should We Respond on the Precipice of War? November 21, 2024
If you were enjoying a quiet Sunday without technology, you may have missed the most dangerous news headline of our generation: “Biden Authorizes the Ukraine to Use U.S. Long-Range Missiles in Russian Territory.” Quietly, on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, when we as a Church contemplated Christ’s return, tribulation, and hardship, our sitting president […]

Overcoming Darkness in Our Time

The sacred scriptures in John 1: 5 tell us, “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  Jesus is the light of the world who came to remove the veil woven over the nations, to dispel the darkness, so we could live in the light as children of God.
The only way darkness can be overcome is to surrender ourselves to Jesus, the light of the world. In today’s world, we see people surrendering to the darkness of sin, cooperating with darkness itself.  John tells us in 1 John 1:5-7, “Now this is the message that we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” while we continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth.  But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.”  Almost everyday, one can read of the atrocities in every nation as people are murdered, maimed or live in fear.  It seems people of faith are attacked and killed as each day goes on now, but not just people of faith, innocents, who become casualties in the war of ideals and greed across the world.
We, as Christians, are called to live peaceably with all, if possible and to overcome evil with good.  In Romans 12:17-21 , we read, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.Rather, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.”  While it is not an easy choice to live God’s word, we must surrender our own ways to Gods way.  God has a plan, so that at the end of all time, the truth of his word will be revealed to all.
May we allow the light of God to shine always in our hearts and minds, so we may follow the Lord and live as children who know the freedom of living in the light.
