  • How Should We Respond on the Precipice of War? November 21, 2024
If you were enjoying a quiet Sunday without technology, you may have missed the most dangerous news headline of our generation: “Biden Authorizes the Ukraine to Use U.S. Long-Range Missiles in Russian Territory.” Quietly, on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, when we as a Church contemplated Christ’s return, tribulation, and hardship, our sitting president […]

The Mercy of God

In our world today many see Christians as worshiping a God that does not exists, who is distant or is there only to crush their hope.  For those of us who have received his mercy and forgiveness, we realize through his living presence in us, how wonderfully merciful and loving he really is.  The readings today from Micah 7, Psalm 103 and Luke 15 describe God in terms of always looking for our return to God and his willingness to take us back.

It is a call to seek the God who created us and allow God to reconcile us to himself and to each other.  The world chooses to live in the darkness of sin, but as Christians, we must choose to live in the light and allow God to transform those areas of darkness and sin.  Only then will we be able to say with the psalmist, “Bless the Lord, my soul; all my being, bless his holy name!  Bless the Lord, my soul; do not forget all the gifts of God, Who pardons all your sins, heals all your ills, Delivers your life from the pit, surrounds you with love and compassion.”

Every conversion starts with understanding where we are and our need for God. We search for all kinds of things to fill the void in our spirit and soul, but only God can fill us with his mercy and love.  Grace awaits the one who will open their heart in surrender.  Like the prodigal son, who squandered his inheritance on sinful living, we all are on a journey searching for fulfillment.  The question is, will we come to that place where we know we need God and turn away from sin and the direction we are going to the open arms of the Father, who wants to lead us to a better place.  Remember what the father in Luke 15 said, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.

Jesus went the way of the cross to redeem us.  He was mocked, beaten, suffered and died for us, so we could have redemption of our sins.  Draw close to God and he will draw close to you.  If you are lost, call out to God asking him to forgive you and come into your life. May your day be filled with his love and presence.
