The Paradox of the Cross
In 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 we read, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside.’ Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith. For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. ”
This scripture is clear in telling us that the message of the cross is salvation to those who accept what Jesus did for us on the cross by taking our sins and nailing them to the cross. God’s sacrificial lamb was the ultimate sacrifice for our salvation. In Deuteronomy 21:22, we see that if a person is a criminal and they were hanged on a tree, they were not to remain there, but to be taken down the same day. It also says anyone handed on a tree is a curse. Paul would go on to say in Galatians 3:13 that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. Human wisdom cannot fathom this. There is a contrast here between the wisdom of words verses the wisdom of the cross.
How can a man be hanged on a tree and that sets us free, you might ask? This can only be accepted through faith in God. God sent his only Son to redeem us. We must accept what he has done for us in order to be saved. Billy Graham said, “This Gospel of Christ and Him crucified is still foolishness to millions who are perishing all over the world today. How few people recognize that the answer to all the world’s problems can be found at the foot of the cross.”
I pray for all who read this that you open your heart to hear God call to you asking you to come to God through Jesus at the foot of the cross.
