The Holy Spirit and you!
Is the Holy Spirit active in your life? We often see the image of the Holy Spirit as the wind, but we must allow the wind to push us in any direction that God chooses for us. Jesus told us in John 16, “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:
sin, because they do not believe in me;
righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;
condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.“
God wants to use you and I to bear fruit in this world, but that is not possible without the Holy Spirit working in our lives. We must surrender to God through his Son Jesus Christ asking him to send the Holy Spirit into our hearts breathing new life in us and allowing God to direct us each and every moment.
In the books of Wisdom and Sirach, we read much about the Holy Spirit, about how the Holy Spirit dwells in a soul given over to God. In Sirach 2 we read, “Let us fall into the hands of the Lord and not into the hands of mortals, For equal to his majesty is his mercy; and equal to his name are his works.” St. Paul echoed these words when he said, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Yet, in God’s hands are mercy and love.
The mercy of God is evident in the time we now live. God calls to each of us to hear his plea that we turn to him and allow him to live in and through us. To live in God is to allow his presence to abide in us each moment giving us hope and the courage to call to others. It is His Holy Spirit that draws us in the very love relationship between the Father and the Son.
Once we surrender to this, then God can live through us to show his love and mercy to others. The world and people will disappoint us, but God never disappoints. May we come to God and allow God to reveal himself to us and fill us, so we can share that love with others.
